Something I have been working on: A comic strip on tornado safety for children and families. We used this as part of a Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant collaboration where we are returning VORTEX-USA research back to the community. Last week with 150 first grade students!
Clicking on images will open a larger version in anew window. I will be adding a PowerPoint of all of the comics in the post for teachers to use as a comment.
I'm adding here in the right order and to show the…

Save the Children has recently published a global study entitled: "Protect A Generation Report: The impact of COVID-19 on children". It is based on a global survey to understand the impact that COVID-19 has had on children and their families, and to hear directly from children themselves. The survey is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind – capturing the voices of over 25,000 children, parents and caregivers from 37 countries.
You can access the…

I have developed a lesson, resources and webinar for students of all ages who might be away from school currently. This is available on YouTube as well as on the edu4drr.org website!
The resources are available for students as well as parents/carers or teachers to print out at home. There are exercises to fill in for hail formation as well as a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a 'formation of hail' diagram. The PowerPoint presentation is available to view or follow along…

This collection, made possible with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, focuses on many aspects of children and disaster. The short, easy-to-read articles condense recent research findings to help those working in the field stay current on topics related to children—how they are vulnerable, how caregivers and emergency managers can…

An initial comic strip was developed that could be used either in newspapers or via the Internet to help younger children access DRR messages. 52 episodes of the comic strip were completed and initially distributed on the edu4drr.org website, as well as through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The comic strip scripts and montages were created by Justin Sharpe, using an iPad App called ‘Toon ToolKit’. The characters were initially drawn and created by John A Abbott of Jot…

This blog post outlines some of the issues of systemic climate risk, possible approaches to dealing with it that aren't necessarily being utilised (around learning that is meaningful and actionable) and is driven from my knowledge and work on disaster risk reduction learning. It's a short blog, but if you are in a hurry or need a policy brief, this is provided at the top of the blog! I will work on an infographic and add…

The original versions of these are almost four years old now, but after some being translated into major European languages that are spoken globally I wanted to be inclusive of other languages. This relies on meeting the right people and for this I relied on my good friend Tatiana Saraeva who translated here into Russian language! I am including the first seven below, with hopefully more to come soon. As…

I have read an interesting blog written by Robert Glasser from UNISDR, with the WCDRR coming up in Cancun. I agree with many of the points made, and would like to see more culturally appropriate community/family led and oriented DRR communication and learning projects given more credence and attention. My research with #CERT and #Listos in the US is showing that these can have a more significant impact on long term cognition, behaviour sand action towards disaster risk and response.…

So after visiting CERT in Santa Barbara, having generated some 80,000 words of transcription, imported into MaxQDA for coding, then coded there is still an overwhelming amount of data. So I wanted to visualise how CERT training enabled TL phases to be triggered and then associating that to the outcome. A couple of weeks ago I produced a base model for this, then I…

This morning I noted the following article on The Guardian website:
"Government failing to protect communities at risk of flooding", MPs say http://gu.com/p/4kjb3
Below is my response with a link to the paper that outlines my research in more detail:
The need for a more ideal response from government, rather than the idea of response is what may be required. I recently pointed this out in a journal article in which I argue…
