What I do for DRR education and how I can contribute to this site
Justin is researching the impact that Social Learning Theory may have on Disaster Risk Reduction practices. Social Learning Theory provides a useful model for behavioural adjustments that encompasses and acknowledges the parts played by cognitive, behavioural and environmental influences in decision-making. This includes influences within the home, in the community, at school and from peers. Who individuals identify with is important. This is especially so when individuals are children, who look to family and other adults to model behaviour.

It is hoped that the fieldwork will help to investigate the effects of social learning on the development of personal and group efficacy by asking the following questions:

What are the most important elements for enabling self-efficacy after education has taken place?
Do new social networks add to or detract from perceived self-efficacy?
Should education for DRR aim to enable personal and group efficacy and will this lead to greater action and behaviour change?

This will involve fieldwork in the UK, USA and Japan, examining in particular social learning in the schools, community and within the family and how self and group efficacy develops.

Biography:
As an educationalist Justin has been developing curriculum materials that use a range of pedagogies to enable students to access the curriculum effectively while allowing them to take responsibility for their own safety and preparedness. This resulted in the creation of the website www.edu4hazards.org in 2007 aimed at helping children and youth prepare for a range of hazards. In particular multiple intelligence theory has been applied to the development and delivery of curriculum alongside experiential learning. The use of multi-media techniques in teaching, learning and sharing of knowledge has been used to engage and motivate students in the process of disaster preparation. In 2009 Justin set up a social networking site for educators involved with Disaster Risk Reduction Education (DRRE), which has over 250 members and can be accessed at: http://www.edu4drr.org. The aim was to share good practice and provide resources and ideas for professionals.

Justin has been able to share information about his research and how curriculum development has impacted on children and their families in terms of preparedness, at a variety of levels (Local, National and International). This has included the presentation of academic papers and poster presentations. He has also been able to observe and evaluate earthquake drills in Los Angeles and Taiwan, feeding back to the agencies that organised these events with the aim of making them meaningful experiences for both students and teachers. Within his own school Justin has set up an emergency planning group which is now responsible for planning and delivery of policy, the training of staff and the execution of drills to test the effectiveness of such strategies.

Hi Justin

It has been a while since we last met. Hope you are fine and the studies are progressing well.

I have been working on a project on various methods for teaching disasters to kindergarten children since Feb. 2010. There is a section in the project that aims to introduce methods that are used in different countries for teaching disasters (such as earthquakes, floods, volcano, etc) to kindergarten children. I was wondering if this request can be posted on the edu4drrwebsite, so I can hear from other members about the experiences they have in their countries in this regard.

I would appreciate your assistance.

Regards

Hello Justin.. yeah, been a long time ne! Come to Japan again, for sure I'll be here at least till the end of October. Yep yep when you were in Japan last August I was doing the project in Indonesia. One of the activities was to introduce a disaster game to kindergarten teachers and children, and further created the adapted game into local context together with the teachers. I just heard that last week the game has started to be practiced also in another city! :) Umm.. as for my current activity, other than writing, I am now preparing a small program for discussion about climate change in a Japan-ASEAN youth exchange program. I will be the facilitator, starting from 30th October till 25th November, and the program will be held on a cruising ship ^ ^ I am so excited. Will update about it later :)

Thanks a lot for actively updating the news and studies about DRR! I think I owe you a lot for this.. :)

Justin,
I did a detailed research on cyclone risk and role of natural buffers like mangroves, casuarinas, or man made structures like dikes in reducing the risk to lives. I found mangroves playing a very strong protective role and reducving risk to human lives by more than 50%. Of course, I analysed total deaths and total human population at risk in the study area.

Hi Justin. Thanks a lot. I'm writing up my thesis at the moment so I'm coming across stuff all the time. I'll be to sure to share anything good. We are not doing so well with DRR education in Australia it seems. Lost of room for improvement. There still seems to be an overriding perception that kids can't do much. Which we all know is far from the truth! Best, BT

Children of the Tsunami

Posted by Briony Towers on March 13, 2012 at 3:42am 0 Comments

This beautifully made documentary investigates children's experiences of the Japanese tsunami and nuclear disaster. It will be of real interest to anyone who works in the field of child-centred disaster risk reduction. The children articulate their experiences with great insight and in doing so, they further challenge the notion that children are passive victims of disaster who must rely on adults to speak for them. Of particular interest, is the children's desire to take what they have…
