Effective Education for Disaster Risk Reduction - Learning Matters.

Curriculum

In September this year in response to the changes in the National Curriculum in England and Wales at Key Stage Three, we put together and taught a scheme of work dealing with hazards and responses (including preparedness) at home and abroad. This page has links to the resources and plans that we used. You could use them as they are or tweak them to your needs. I hope you find them useful! Remember: disaster preparedness begins at school! Lesson One

ALTERNATIVE LESSON 1:
If you thhink students may struggle with the first lesson, this PowerPoint Presentation and Starter may help! You could mix these into the original lesson framework as well!

Hazards on holiday - How to prepare! (lesson plan)

HOMEWORK: Students to make their own emergency kit and bring to school. Take a photograph of the kit and put on USB memory stick to share with class.

(IMPORTANT: Many of the items to be included in a kit are found around the house but strongly encourage students to talk to their parents about this before removing items to bring into class!) Also give this homework out and allow 1 week to complete!

Homework: To prepare a storyboard for filming during the next lesson (Storyboard for filming preparation This is A4 size, I suggest making it A3 with photocopier!)

Comment by Justin Sharpe on October 23, 2011 at 13:21: Adding a new curriculum guide for interactive teaching of DRR in Georgia, but could be applied in any classroom for younger students, most of lessons are aimed at grades 5-9 and the aim is for student participation and understanding rather than didactic teaching of curriculum, which is definitely a step forward. What is most useful from the point of view of our members who teach in varied settings with varied resources is that there is not an over-reliance on expensive resources. Much of the work is exploratory and experiential with an assumed aim of deeper learning, rather than teaching to get through a curriculum. Plesae do download and think about what you might use for your classrooms!

Comment by Justin Sharpe on March 8, 2010 at 13:10: Edu4hazards.org now has a live seismograph feed which updates via a screen grab every 30 seconds. If there is a large enough earthquake occurring world wide or a smaller one closer to the UK it will pick it up! This is a good tool to use in the classroom for learning about earthquake waves. I saw the 2008 earthquake in China as it occurred and grouped students together to watch. I could tell how large the quake was and discussed this with students. Understanding the science behind hazard events is very important and tools such as this seismograph are very useful.
