Second half of my tornado safety & preparedness for children & families is available below. I expanded on learning from the previous comic strip & included some bi-lingual moments (65+m speak at home in USA). Thank you to America Gavira-Pabon for her translations skills!

I wanted the comic to be whimsical and fun to read whilst addressing some of the issues around conversations with kids on safety and preparedness in severe weather events.

Thinking about family members that may have grown up in another country with an absence of certain hazards (e.g., tornadoes) is important. Talking with them is a great first step...we transition to bilingual here, leaving the Spanish language translated for readers of English, while being inclusive of Spanish speakers.

Especially if this allows for questions to be asked about what a Tornado Watch or a Tornado Warning means. This includes addressing expectations for safety as well as thinking about pets. Note that most of these panels are in Spanish language.

I wanted to show what happens when sheltering in your safe space (the previous comic strip showed the dad and his daughter identifying the best places using internet research together and then exploring their home for the best options. In this last comic strip they follow through...and we end on a lighter note too!

Something I have been working on: A comic strip on tornado safety for children and families. Last week with 150 first grade students!

Clicking on images will open a larger version in anew window. I will be adding a PowerPoint of all of the comics in the post for teachers to use as a comment.

I'm adding here in the right order and to show the way in which the comic strips were designed to be viewed by the reader! Communication is crucial for hazard, disaster and emergency management professionals as well las meteorologists...

Part One:

This one has me in the comic strip as the communicator of tornado warning signs and safety precautions...we developed the graphic in the fifth frame in house at NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory as part of a project in Mississippi and Alabama...

Using humour is important (in the comic strip I didn't remember batteries - easily done and important to recognise!) whilst also acting as a device to turn the story back to the family and share in their storm-ready preparations!

Discussions about using a Go-Bag to hold important items is important! While developing the comic strip I showed my six-year old. When we had severe weather (including a tornado) on Sunday he prepared his Go-Bag which included cars for his little brother! It was rather lovely!

And after all the preparation and work, perhaps relaxing in front of the TV is warranted...

This sets up the next comic strip using humour. I hope your enjoyed!

An initial comic strip was developed that could be used either in newspapers or via the Internet to help younger children access DRR messages. 52 episodes of the comic strip were completed and initially distributed on the edu4drr.org website, as well as through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The comic strip scripts and montages were created by Justin Sharpe, using an iPad App called ‘Toon ToolKit’. The characters were initially drawn and created by John A Abbott of Jot Studios and later adapted by UNESCO, Pakistan. Furthermore an iBook was created which also included interactivity, quizzes and a video of the comic strips.

Following these initial publications, there was interest in translation and use in Fiji, Indonesia, Iran and Turkey (the comic has also been translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese on this site). This led to the development of easily distributed PowerPoint slides that included original and blank text versions (with speech bubbles and narration boxes rendered empty). They were made available on the website and different language versions were produced.

Further collaboration with a researcher from Iran led to pilot project in a Tehran kindergarten using the comic strips deemed most relevant to Iranian context such as earthquake, lightning, and tsunami. Following the publication about this project in a peer reviewed academic journal (Sharpe and Izadkhah, 2014), further interest came from UNESCO in Pakistan where a comic book was developed for the local context and published in 2014.

One of the reasons for using comic strips as a communication tool came from recognizing its cultural significance as well as its accessibility by a wide audience. For instance, within the pop art movement it has influenced its use in advertising, film and vice versa. This cultural significance helps to place the medium as one that can be embedded and used as part of lifelong learning, something that is key to adaptability and resilience in societies faced by climate change challenges now and in the future.

Following an agreement to develop the comic strip further, UNESCO Pakistan worked on developing comic characters that were deemed suitable for the country’s culture while the montages and scripts remained identical. A printed book was produced and distributed to schools in Pakistan of which a PDF version can be viewed at: Learning about disasters and staying safe

The book was produced under UNESCO’s regular programme entitled: “capacity and disaster risk reduction in conflict resolution through peace and human rights education”. The purpose of the publication was to allow younger children to access information about how they can stay safe by preparing for and responding appropriately to disaster threats, which was deemed particularly important following the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, Pakistan in which many children lost their lives. In particular, the comic was designed to allow children to relate to the characters and allow them to learn how to stay safe and help others around them in their family to do the same. Using the comic strip format allows the reader to follow the story at their own pace while each individual comic strip had its own narrative and message.
The publication was distributed to disaster prone areas of Pakistan as a form of advocacy and learning tool for children and their families.

Children and youth, are often perceived as being highly vulnerable to hazards and disasters, but may also be key agents of change for disaster risk reduction within the their communities and are often targeted by DRR projects. They are able to take on board new knowledge and learning, which may also be shared with their parents or carers. However, children like their parents need to have their interest stimulated and held if such education projects are to hold water. With very young children who are just learning to read, or even fluent readers, comic strips may hold the key to unlocking their interest in disaster preparedness.

Consequently, younger children were the initial target group (aged 6-11), with the comic strip book going to schools in areas at risk of disaster. However children of most ages would be able to enjoy the comic strips for their silliness, use of rhymes in the disaster messages and by showing the ways in which children might help their family to be prepared too. The comics not only addressed potentially life saving actions but also information about preparation (such as emergency go-bags) as well as being evacuated to a shelter and how pets might be cared for too.
Research was carried out as part of the aforementioned pilot project in a Tehran kindergarten, into the use of comic strips as an effective tool for communication. In particular it was found that a comic strips visual quality can provoke emotional responses and understanding while the medium also allows a bridging of the gap between school and home life. (Sharpe and Izadkhah, 2014). The comic strips were in colour, making them attractive to look at and read. Research was carried out on both the use of comic strips and their preference among young readers (Sharpe and Izadkhah, 2014). The nature of a comic strip also democratises learning as the reader follows at his/her own pace and takes in the scenes presented in each frame as well as the disaster messages.

Finally, education for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) wass seen as a key component to the 2005-2015 Hyogo Framework for action (HFA) which puts ‘knowledge, innovation and education’ (HFA, 2005) at the heart of it goals for enabling individuals, communities and societies become better prepared for responding to the threat from disasters. By developing, creating, testing and using these comics for learning with children in Iran and Pakistan, we addressed: ‘knowledge’ (through the storylines), ‘innovation’ (through the medium) and ‘education’ (through the process of learning).

Why comic strips?

Comic strips were chosen as an easily understood and accessible format able to reach vulnerable communities in more remote areas. The messages contained within them are simple, clear and effective and use IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) standard DRR advice. Comics can be a cost effective way of distributing information and may also benefit from being shared by children within their families and communities in an informal way (i.e. comics often get passed around or casually picked up and read, or even the pictures looked at by non-readers and may provide a gateway into reading - see: http://resources.collins.co.uk/free/Comicsthegatewaytoreading.pdf The comic book is also an effective medium for more remote communities with limited internet access, and so the disaster messages and advice were simple, practical and are repeated with previous situations signposted. As the comic develops there are visual clues as to what may happen to the characters as well as the characters learning as the comic book progress about what they can do themselves to be prepared, which enables all important self-efficacy in disaster preparation and response, especially for children.

The comic book printed by UNESCO was distributed in Pakistan to areas where vulnerable populations live and although there were many pertinent hazards specific to Pakistan, hazards such as volcanic eruptions were also included, thereby contributing to wider geography education too! Care was taken in changing the dress and look of some of the comic characters so that they could be more readily identified with in the Pakistan context, although the stories, montages that they appeared in were identical to the original ‘Silly Timmy’ comic strip. Of most importance was the idea that each comic strip within the book could provide a simple lesson about hazards and disasters as well as contributing to an on- going narrative. Consequently, the comic strip dealt with issues such as hand-washing, evacuation, lightning strike, earthquakes, tsunamis as well as family preparedness and preparation. The principal character learns through mistakes and has friends who help him become more resilient over time.

Overall though, the characters are funny, likeable and vulnerable who bond and become friends over time while learning what action to take (knowing about the 30/30 rule for lightning safety) and what action not to take (learning not to stay under a tree or lie on the ground in a lightning storm). The idea is to engage interest in learning about safety while having fun doing so. Finally the comic format is easily replicable in other countries and original Photoshop files are available for other organisations, NGO’s or newspapers to use.

How many people within the vulnerable population the intervention reach?
So far, more than 800 copies were distributed in different parts of Pakistan including Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) reaching more than 3000 students and youth members. As mentioned previously, the true number may be much higher as comic books be shared and distributed informally.

What kind of a change did it make?
This publication and specially the situations outlined in this publication did contribute to promote ideas of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and raising awareness at the school level. Based on this illustrative book, children in the project area themselves developed the school level emergency evacuation plans in consultation with the teachers and communities. Being agent of change children now does talk about these issues at school and at the community level.

What evidence do you have to support this?
Some of the photographs with regards to the development of emergency evacuation plan are appended below:-

This blog post outlines some of the issues of systemic climate risk, possible approaches to dealing with it that aren't necessarily being utilised (around learning that is meaningful and actionable) and is driven from my knowledge and work on disaster risk reduction learning. It's a short blog, but if you are in a hurry or need a policy brief, this is provided at the top of the blog! I will work on an infographic and add too!

Summary:

Definition: Systemic risk is that which leads to a breakdown of an entire system, rather than individual parts or components. Threats include “individual failures, accidents or disruptions to a system via a process of contagion” (Centeno et al., 2015).

Principal features: highly interconnected risks alongside complex causal structures (such as not being confined by borders) coupled with non-linear cause-effect relationships; they can trigger unexpected large-scale changes to a system or bring about large-scale threats that can disperse beyond the point of origin. A lack of knowledge about these interconnections and their interdependencies may amplify risk and as such may require new tools and practices to address them.

Implications: Systemic risk are perceived to be governed by a collective responsibility, with no-one having the right to legitimately act on behalf of the entire system. This creates stasis, which thus far has been broached by arguing that incentives to change should not be based on changing human behaviour (Luyendik, 2015). At the same time there has been a focus on adaptation and transformation of the organisation and the system. This appears contradictory.

Possible Approaches: Often terms such as adaptation and transformation are used to signal what needs to be done or acted upon. However, such assumptions, often remain that: assumptions. This leaves a value-action gap, that is unlikely to be narrowed through knowledge alone, or changes to structures. It is important to understand how this might be brought about through conscientisation and learning that is transformative, socially constructed and values critical reflection (Sharpe, 2018). Many systemic risks (including climate change) are slow-moving/slow-onset events that don’t require reflex actions but rather more considered critically reflected ones.

What is Systemic Risk?

Systemic risk is that which leads to a breakdown of an entire system, rather than individual parts or components. Threats include “individual failures, accidents or disruptions to a system via a process of contagion” (Centeno et al., 2015). Natural hazards which may also be triggered by changes in climate are often viewed as exogenous risks. This is recognised as such by financial markets and insurance mechanisms (such as re-insurance) that are part of economic and institutional response to such risks. However, anthropogenic climate change might be viewed as bringing endogenousforces into play through the interaction of people and the decisions they make that produce feedback loops that exacerbate and continue to produce rising temperatures. The impacts of these rising temperatures include hydro-meteorological events such as storms, floods, heatwaves and droughts of increasing frequency and magnitude. They are also transnational and part of a wider connected system of ocean currents, weather systems and patterns whose disruption is only beginning to be understood. There are cascades of climate change as well as in disasters.

My own curiosity is driven by the geographical nature of such risks and how we can more effectively respond to them. In particular, the transboundary and tele-connected aspects of the risks which means that theoretical research might help inform better policy and governance of such risk, allowing for transformation to be meaningful and grounded in practical action. Having recently worked as a consultant for UNSIDR (now UNDRR) I analysed gaps between intentions and realities in delivering on the Sendai Framework across Europe. This highlighted the complexities of these issues as well as the value action gaps at government levels. This analysis of the issues of complexity is important when attempting to learn how we might move our own learning from single-loop learning to double or triple-loop learning to better understand what works and why, rather than assuming (erroneously) that it does, which can lead to maladaptation to climate change as well as other systemic risks.

Our current understanding of Transnational Climate Impacts (TCI) are based on current exposure from actual data. If countries maintain certain trade profiles for instance, there may be exposure to increased risks as a result of climate change in other countries. Risk pathways may be transboundaryin nature with impacts transmitted over borders between neighbouring countries or tele-connected, with impacts from more remote links (e.g. trade) due to the impact of climate change in a distant part of the planet (from their perspective) that require complex governance response.

Discussion.

As a researcher, I am interested in global environmental boundary research that identified nine critical processes that regulate Earth systems and its resilience, suggesting that sustainable development is only likely if we stay within planetary boundary thresholds (Rockström et al., 2009; Steffen et al., 2015b). However, there is strong evidence to suggest that many of these have already been transgressed and pose a significant risk now and in the future. This includes anthropogenic climate change. Much of the response narrative around climate change (itself related to and borne from research on disaster risks) revolve around similar terminology and frameworks bounded by adaptation, resilience and transformation.

There is room for this to be challenged. To take one of these terms – resilience, there may be an argument that it is too focussed on maintaining the status quo (essentially fiddling while the planet burns) resulting in stasis because assumptions about what should be done are not augmented on howthis should be carried out. There is an argument that his might be brought about through conscientisation and learning that is transformative, socially constructed and values critical reflection (Sharpe, 2018). Many systemic risks (including climate change) are slow-moving/slow-onset events that don’t require reflex actions but rather more considered critically reflected ones. These are the perspectives that I would bring to bear on this topic, which have up to now been missing from key literature in this young but burgeoning field.

An example: The 2011 floods in Thailand impacting on two different parts of the world

There is an opportunity to look at transnational climate risks in a holistic manner, in particular focusing on learning as a key but overlooked component of effective planning and response to climate risks. While recognising that the research is in its infancy, resulting in a lack of data, some of the understanding around cascades of climate change have not been well explored. An example would be the 2011 floods in Thailand, which caused disruption to disc-drive and other technology industries and a questioning of the poor resilience of just-in-time modes of component supply to California, USA. Although widely reported, it is difficult to find evidence of changes to these practices since this event. At the same time damaged rice crops from the same weather and flood event caused a spike in the price of rice exports from Thailand. In 2008, Senegal, a major importer of rice suffered badly, with a doubling of rice prices and food riots undermining trust in government. Unlike Silicon Valley businesses, there has been a major government drive (supported by funding) towards improving rice yields in Senegal to limit the impact of external shocks. There is an interesting report by the FAO here that also examines the impact of disaster on food supply if you want further information.

This example, neatly encapsulates what I believe to be missing in current research around both disaster risk reduction and climate change cascades: Transformative Learning.

Transformative Learning (Mezirow, 1991, 1995, 1996; Cranton, 1994, 1996) is that which leads to a change in an individual’s frame of reference. Frames of reference can be identified as the “associations, concepts, values, feelings and conditioned responsesthat are the result of experiences that define an individual’s life world” (Mezirow, 1997 p. 5). Frames of reference can result in a rejection of ideas that fail to fit an individual’s preconceptions, leading ideas to be dismissed as irrelevant or wrong, irrespective of evidence (Sharpe, 2016). This may go some way to explaining why some individuals choose not to address threats posed by disasters as doing so may lead to discomfort. Transformative Learning allows learners open to experiences that enable new, difficult or challenging frames of reference to be accommodated, potentially rejected but not denied (Hulme, 2009). This is of increasing importance for threats that are often framed as being existential rather than personal which include disaster risks that are increasingly likely to be triggered or exacerbated by climate change.

I leave you with a quote from my own work that hopefully brings this into focus: "Resilience and adaptation to both disasters and climate change, indicate processes of flexibility and adjustment. The range of adaptations open to individuals and by extension collectives will be limited in many ways. One important limiting dynamic is associated with capacity to learn, and the depth or superficiality of any learning." (Sharpe, 2016)

I have read an interesting blog written by Robert Glasser from UNISDR, with the WCDRR coming up in Cancun. I agree with many of the points made, and would like to see more culturally appropriate community/family led and oriented DRR communication and learning projects given more credence and attention. My research with #CERT and #Listos in the US is showing that these can have a more significant impact on long term cognition, behaviour sand action towards disaster risk and response. Relevance is key, so Listos target family disaster preparedness first, which within the Latino community is a huge part of life, while their gentle discussion, correction and demonstration allows for myths, including 'Grandma's home remedies' to be examined and compared against what we know from modern medicine to allow communities to transform their understanding, learning and behaviour as a result.

The link to the original blog can be viewed here: click to see the blog in a new window>> Taking his point in turn, I would like to show what we do through this website to address each point, even if it isn't on UNISDR's radar, it should be!
1. Be Engaging.

This is something I have always believed, advocated and attempted to achieve, especially with use of videos, humour and of course the Silly Timmy comic strip which is beginning to be translated into many different languages. And what was striking about this point was the example given about looking after pets, and not wanting to leave them behind following a disaster, which is why I dealt with this through the comic strip too, with one example (in English, below):

2. Respect that people have many pressing concerns.

Very true. This can become problematic and my research is finding that understanding the cultural, economic and social needs of the community you work with is paramount. Just throwing 'education' around to plug perceived knowledge gaps via social media, leaflets or posters is not enough! When undertaking research for my PhD recently, I found the following to be true:

"And while it is true that those who are not literate have coping mechanisms, they are doubly challenged when they don’t speak the local language! And this highlights a principal reason why Listos is so important: it provides easy to understand and access information about preparedness and response for emergencies without overloading participants with too much information, while delivering courses in a relatively short time-scale in their language! But the importance of having classes delivered by human beings (a as opposed to online classes or video instruction) that come from and understand the cultural nuances of the community they are working with (as well as the language) cannot and should not be underestimated. Furthermore curriculum and teaching has been designed to be flexible to a range of functional and physical needs, thereby enhancing their inclusivity. In fact these are the key underpinnings of learning intentions: being able to reach out to and engage hard-to-reach and previously assumed hard-to-teach communities by taking a holistic and flexible approach to content and delivery of curriculum."

So what is important is to make disaster preparedness, risk reduction and planning a pressing concern.

3. Build understanding and trust.

When people attend Listos classes in Santa Barbara, families often attend together, while every family brings food and it becomes a shared cultural experience, while building trust and cohesion throughout the wider community. And of course, the point about relevance is key here too. This is something we have strived to develop through our resources and efforts over the last nine years through curriculum development, resources created here and through agencies such as IFRCRC to ensure that it is up to date, relevant and compelling!Silly Timmy Disaster Comic in Italiantag:www.edu4drr.org,2017-03-17:2114760:BlogPost:403102017-03-17T13:00:00.000ZJustin Sharpehttp://www.edu4drr.org/profile/JustinSharpe

Having flown half way around the world to share my research on how transformative learning impacts on adaptation and resilience towards disaster risk and make links with Indonesian researchers, I find myself staring at a clock. But the hands on the clock don’t move. Because they can’t. Ever. The clock I am looking at is a permanent record of a pyroclastic surge that enveloped the small settlement I am now standing in, following the eruption of Merapi volcano in 2010. The collection of everyday objects, known locally as Museum Sisa Hartaku (which translates as: ‘My remaining Treasure Museum’) were melted and twisted out of shape when burning hot clouds of ash and particulates as hot as 300 degrees Celsius surged into local homes. Thankfully, the residents had evacuated. However, their pets and animals were not so lucky.

Clock – Museum Sisa Hartaku which translates as ‘My Remaining Treasure Museum’, following the eruption of Merapi volcano in 2010.

And so I gain a very small insight about the choices faced by individuals, families and communities living on an active planet that has potential to bring both great bounty and loss. It is part of the reason I am here as an early career researcher: creating research ties between the UK and Indonesia around the subjects of disaster risk reduction, resilience, well-being and culture. And rather than being an afterthought, culture is integral to understanding how learning is interpreted and influences long-term cognition, attitude and behaviour towards disaster risk. The aims of the workshop at which I have come to present are closely aligned with my own research, which is exploring how transformative learning impacts on adaptation and resilience towards disaster risk. My presentation echoes how transformational learning can be utilised by unlocking deeper level thought processes and reflection.

In particular, I outline how transformational learning might be applied in enabling communities at risk to re-evaluate their past knowledge, experience and cultural practices in the light of new information, knowledge and learning as part of a collaborative and multi-stakeholder process of disaster adaptation and resilience. The visual model I demonstrate which encapsulates this process gave participants an opportunity to think about how it might be used in a localised setting. One outcome from the workshop was to write a working paper which will include specific Indonesian examples to be published on the Prevention-Web website. This will then be written up into a research proposal with Indonesian colleagues with the aim of securing funding to carry out wider research.

Justin Sharpe's Visualisation of the Transformative Learning Process

Overall, the workshop gave researchers the chance to share their investigations as well as explore how future research by an UK/Indonesian team could be utilised. Local knowledge, language skills and understanding of customs are integral to building trusting relationships that can unlock more nuanced understanding of disaster risk but also explore how communities might better adapt to their threats as well as increase their resilience- building potential.

Finally, interaction with Indonesian researchers allowed UK based researchers such as myself the chance to understand where the gaps in research remain and also how we might work together to bridge them over the next five to ten years. It is vital that such opportunities continue to be offered and taken up so that our own ‘automatic thoughts’, responses and ideas are replaced with critical reflection informed by learning experiences that have the power to be truly transformative.

Sharing is free as long as original sources are attributed they are not for commercial distribution, education only! Thank you!

However, the first comics translated into Spanish are episodes 31-52! So enjoy looking at these while others are translated and put on this page! IF they appear too small, because of page width restrictions, click on each strip and a larger version will appear!

As always, translations have been carried out by native speakers and NOT Google translate, so they should hopefully flow naturally!

PowerPoint with originals plus translation are included below too.

Last week saw the introduction of the Silly Timmy Disaster Comic strip in German, now this week we have French with thanks to Maya Schaerer (a long time member of edu4drr.org) for the translation. I hope to be adding more as time goes on and as they become translated. Even then there is a process that I go through ensuring font sizes and fonts are consistent with the original English and the taking PowerPoint versions and creating jpegs for easy distribution. I am including the Translated and edited PowerPoint below the comics in case his is of use! I noted that the comic strip paper I wrote with another edu4drr.org member, Dr Yasamin Izadkhah, has just passed 500 reads and a lot of these are coming from the Philippines, where it may mean the comics are being used! If you know, I would like to know! As always, Artwork by John A Abbott of Jot Studios and stories and montages by Justin Sharpe from edu4drrr. Sharing is free as long as original sources are attributed they are not for commercial distribution, education only! Thank you!

So I wanted to visualise how CERT training enabled TL phases to be triggered and then associating that to the outcome. A couple of weeks ago I produced a base model for this, then I highlighted KEY events from A (Automatic thoughts), B (Bridging process), C (Challenge), D (Difficulties) and E (Experience). These became a type of learning spiral and today I put all of this together to make a nautilus! I hope it makes sense!

Essentially, if you follow the spiral out from the CERT programme a series of classes, exercises and drills slowly transform individuals by enabling them to recognise automatic responses, via the learning and then application of new knowledge that can be tested in practical situations including table top exercises, drills, and reflections. Learning is socially constructed as well as learned and so this results in an iterative process where old and new information is held in an unconscious buffer. Over time and with repeated application of new knowledge it allows meaning perspectives to be transformed. One key outcome is that individuals who go through the training become more confident in their ability to help others as well as learning how to work as a team and negotiate difficulty. This results in closer community connectedness, better communication and stronger resilience.
Disaster Aware and Prepare Curriculum for Primary Schooltag:www.edu4drr.org,2017-01-05:2114760:BlogPost:397972017-01-05T15:00:00.000ZJustin Sharpehttp://www.edu4drr.org/profile/JustinSharpe

If you plan to use or have used any of the resources, do please comment below the resources! The resources have been designed to be used in a setting where sheets might be printed out and photocopied for classroom use. They would make a great resource for embedding disaster safety into the national curriculum in your own country. They are only currently available in English, but I hope they can be used as a stimulus material as well as for teacher training.

This is a work in progress and more resources will be added over time!

These resources have been developed with flexibility in mind in terms of how they are delivered. You know your students’ strengths and weaknesses as well as their ability with both literacy and numeracy and what they respond well to in your classroom.

The curriculum is intended to challenge and stimulate your students as well as helping you to develop your own pedagogy and enhance your own teaching skills. Each lesson lays out the learning objectives for that particular lesson as well as the materials and steps required to achieve this. It is essential that you as the teacher read through and prepare these lessons in advance of teaching them as the preparation may require you to make something from the teachers resource booklet or bring in an essential ingredient (such as a small amount of flour) in order to be able to deliver the lesson effectively and to maximize the learning potential of your students. The lessons take a particular hazard or risk that there might be in your community and embed learning materials, exercises, games and even puppet shows to help communicate risk and preparedness lessons.

Each part of the lesson has timings next to each task. These are there as a guideline and if students are fully engaged in a task and need more time, use your judgement as some task mays need less time while some need less. The evaluation tasks at the end of each lesson are important as a way of cementing knowledge or as a way of leading into the next lesson.

This morning I noted the following article on The Guardian website:

"Government failing to protect communities at risk of flooding", MPs say http://gu.com/p/4kjb3

Below is my response with a link to the paper that outlines my research in more detail:

The need for a more ideal response from government, rather than the idea of response is what may be required. I recently pointed this out in a journal article in which I argue that governments need to critically reflect on the root causes of flooding by engaging with communities who are not only at risk because of the hydro-meteorological events but also because of their own actions and behaviours that have led to increased soil compaction and run-off due to changing farming practices, for instance.

In particular, following the 2007 floods that impacted on 500,000 homes there was a long and considered period of reflection that included interviewing those affected as well as professionals who respond to floods and those that are charged with minimising their impacts. The Pitt Review of Floods was produced of which the majority of its recommendations were carried out by successive governments. This contrasted wildly with the 2014 flooding in the Somerset Levels which was largely politicised and led by vocal opposition to the perceived failures of the Environment Agency over dredging (the perceived root cause) while farmers and landowners were left unchallenged and therefore unchanged in their actions (an actual root cause).

I also argue that it is important that climate change is reframed as not just something that affects others or is part of the 'other' but is and will affect all of us, which means our actions and behaviours need to be critically reflected upon. I argue that Transformational Learning, in which the habits of mind or meaning perspectives are challenged and reframed in order to deal with the challenges posed by climate change, which will include increased intensity and frequency of flooding is what is required. The journal article will appear in the August issue of the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction but can be accessed online through ResearchGate: http://bit.ly/1U5vRbB
Working Paper on developing transformative learning for disaster resilience.tag:www.edu4drr.org,2015-10-15:2114760:BlogPost:376042015-10-15T13:00:00.000ZJustin Sharpehttp://www.edu4drr.org/profile/JustinSharpe

Transformation is a term widely used in resilience thinking as a form of response to living with disaster risks. Key to enabling resilience is adaptability, itself a learned concept and practice. Transformative Learning may be a way of unlocking small and large changes in cognition, attitudes and behaviours towards disaster risk while the experience itself may allow for requisite competencies and efficacy outcomes that allow learners to learn to be flexible and adaptable in the face of shocks, including those from disasters.

This paper seeks to unlock what is meant by Transformative Learning through the development of a visualisation (see right and click on to make larger) that may be used to help cement understanding of what may be expected to occur as part of the learning process. It is hoped that this will allow others to also develop and utilise the model, especially in contexts where knowledge deficit approaches to resilience has failed to take hold.

The paper is viewable below as well as through the King's College London, Environment Politics and Development Working Paper pages, Academia and ResearchGate. The paper is a working paper which will be subject to change and development as well as the model itself which is being used to help NGO's and others understand what might be involved as part of the process as well as expected outcomes. Key to unlocking transformative learning is critical reflection which requires the spaces and places for this to occur.

For my part I was involved with the social learning aspects of the project, in particular, analysing the inputs from the case studies (which included, heatwaves in London, earthquakes in Turkey, flooding in north east England and landslides from the South Tyrol region) and attempting to identify resilient behaviour. This is of course a complex and is hard to summarise in a blog, but essentially the extent to which individuals use their networks to learn together as well as share learning practices is key to unlocking social learning. The following PowerPoint slide shows the Poster presented to the final conference as a talking point for both highlighting the evidence and impact of social learning on specific resilience to heatwave risk in London. A series of 88 interviews (both structured and semi-structured were carried out in order understand what the elderly in London (a high risk group when faced with heatwaves) did to adapt and become more resilient to this particular hazard. Note that last sentence. The adaptation and learning experiences are evolving and may evolve further in the future and so resilience, in this case is not an 'end goal' but one that should evolve and be a process rather than an end point. This is key to unlocking what resilience is: a process where individuals and communities actively learn how to learn to live with hazard risks.

As you may know, I am carrying out research for my PhD, which is related to Transformational Learning. This is said to occur when learners are faced with difficulties which may have occurred via the training or learning experience being offered. I am interested in this as I believe it may open the door to learning that can be maintained over longer periods of time. I have carried out narrative inquiry interviews with Community Emergency Response Teams in the USA, as this is a type of informal learning. I will be carrying out semi-structured interviews with people responsible for learning in International NGO's this month.

But what I really need is people who are emergency managers or first responders (Blue Light Agencies such as Firefighters and EMT/Ambulance) who might be able to talk about the impact of training, experience and trust as these all impact on the effectiveness of Transformational Learning. I am attaching a link and a link to the questionnaire below. If you know of anyone or it is yourself, I would REALLY appreciate your help as this is essential to my PhD research. If you have any questions, you can also do so here.

Thank you very much for your help! PLEASE pass on to whoever you can, even if it just the link to the questionnaire with a little bit of explanation!

WE HAVE MISSED YOU!

If you have not visited for a time because of work commitments, then now is the time to renew your acquaintance with us! As ever we try to offer the latest tools and techniques to help you deliver appropriate, accurate and fun ways of learning about disaster resilience and preparedness. At the end of this e-mail is a plea for donations as I all have to pay for hosting and the url again, but before that, I am including some of the ways that Edu4DRR has contributed to knowledge and education in our field of DRR:

1. Using a prezi for your presentation in order to engage your audience:

This is a real presentation that I gave to scientists (Volcanologists and seismologist at UCL). Get inspired! Click on the image or you can view at: http://prezi.com/vd1q_umyu0so/using-comic-strips-for-drr-learning/

2. Comics and Vines to get your message across:

This has been running for a while but Silly Timmy is now a book and being used in Pakistan. If you click on the image it will link to the pdf version of the book! I am also working with a DRR member in Fiji to develop curriculum resources too, so the story goes on.

3. At the forefront of academic practice and policy:

Myself and fellow Edu4DRR member Yasamin Izadkhah wrote a paper entitled 'Use of comic strips in teaching earthquakes to kindergarten children'. This outlined the educational and learning theories, the historical perspectives for using comic strips as well as the pilot project in Tehran, Iran. You can view the paper at:
